- Paint, flooring, tile and baseboard quantities from your room's dimensions
- Standard waste built in (10%), with paint coats and door/window deductions handled
- Boxes-to-buy for flooring and tile, rounded up to whole boxes
- Two total-cost scenarios (flooring vs. tile) using your own prices
- Every coverage and waste figure cited with its source, on a dedicated sheet
How accurate is this?
Coverage and waste figures are industry standards, cross-checked across multiple sources: paint at 350 sq ft per gallon per coat (This Old House, Lowe's), 10% flooring/tile waste for straight-lay installs, and standard 20 sq ft door / 15 sq ft window deductions. It's a planning estimator, not a professional take-off — always confirm against your actual product's coverage and raise the waste factor to 15%+ for diagonal or herringbone layouts. Full sourcing is on the "Assumptions" sheet inside the file.
Questions about this calculator
What units does it use?
Imperial — feet, square feet, gallons and linear feet, the standard for North American home renovation. Enter room dimensions in feet.
Why are flooring and tile shown separately?
They're two options for the same floor, so the estimator prices each one and gives you two total scenarios — it never adds them together, which would double-count the floor.
Does it include primer or underlayment?
No — it covers paint, flooring, tile and trim. If you're painting bare drywall you'll want a separate primer coat, and some floors need underlayment; add those to your own list.
